EMDR fOR FAMILY DYSFUNCTION
Having a dysfunctional & emotionally immature family is rough
Living in an environment where peace, understanding, and healthy communication are lacking can take a toll on your emotional well-being. It's natural to feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and even isolated when your family doesn't provide the support and love you need.
In a dysfunctional and emotionally immature family, it can feel like you're walking on eggshells, constantly trying to avoid conflict or seeking validation that never seems to come. Your feelings may be brushed aside or invalidated, leaving you feeling unheard and invisible. It can be incredibly disheartening and challenging to maintain a sense of self-worth when your family fails to nurture your emotional growth.
I know all of this because I’ve helped hundreds of clients in this same situation—wanting connection, but lacking the right family environment from which to receive it. If you’re feeling this way, know that you don’t have to be alone in this anymore. I’m here to help.
Understanding Dysfunctional Family Systems
Our family plays a significant role in shaping who we are today. However, if you have a dysfunctional or emotionally immature family system, you may carry unresolved pain and emotional burdens from your upbringing. It's important to understand that you are not alone. Many people face these challenges, and with attachment-focused EMDR therapy, there is hope for real, transformative change.
What is Attachment-Focused EMDR?
So, what exactly is attachment-focused EMDR? It is a specialized form of EMDR therapy that utilizes attachment theory to help heal the wounds caused by dysfunctional family systems. EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a well-established therapeutic approach that helps individuals process and resolve traumatic experiences. However, attachment-focused EMDR goes beyond simple trauma resolution; it specifically targets the deep-seated attachment/developmental wounds and patterns that originate from your childhood. By leveraging the therapeutic relationship and working from a secure framework, we’re able to go further in your healing.
How does it work?
In attachment-focused EMDR therapy, we work collaboratively to identify the core issues rooted in your childhood and formative experiences. We then use bilateral stimulation techniques, such as tapping, to activate your brain's natural healing capabilities. This powerful process allows you to reprocess painful memories, challenge limiting beliefs, and develop healthier coping strategies. Through consistent sessions, you can experience genuine emotional healing and create a more fulfilling life.
What are the benefits of attachment-focused eMDR?
With attachment-focused EMDR, you can expect remarkable results. Unlike traditional talk therapies that may take years to uncover deep-seated wounds, EMDR therapy offers quicker breakthroughs. In just a few sessions, you may begin to feel profound shifts in your emotional well-being. It's not magic, but rather a proven method for reaching the core of your pain and facilitating lasting change. This therapy has provided hope and healing for countless individuals who have struggled with past traumas and family systems.

What Issues Can Attachment-Focused EMDR Help Treat?
-
Boundaries are like the invisible lines we draw to protect our emotional and physical well-being. But when you've grown up in an emotionally immature or dysfunctional family, these lines can become blurry and hard to define.
In emotionally immature families, boundaries may not have been respected or encouraged. Maybe your needs went unheard or were overridden by the needs of others. As a result, you may struggle with setting boundaries, finding it difficult to assert your own needs and put yourself first.
With attachment-focused EMDR therapy we are able to reprocess the beliefs and situations that make it feel impossible to set a boundary. Together we’ll help you find the power to respect yourself and your loved one through healthy boundary setting.

Codependency and enmeshment erase our individual sense of self. These are common challenges that can arise in emotionally immature or dysfunctional family systems. Codependency refers to a pattern of behavior where you prioritize others' needs and emotions above your own, often at the expense of your own well-being. Enmeshment, on the other hand, is when the boundaries between individuals become blurred, leading to a lack of autonomy and a sense of being entangled with others.
Growing up in such a family system, you may have been taught that your worth is defined by how much you give and sacrifice for others. Gradually, you may have lost touch with your own needs and desires, feeling responsible for everyone else's happiness. It can be exhausting, constantly putting others first and neglecting your own well-being.
The transition to reclaiming your own autonomy can be scary. After so long of making your decisions based on the thoughts and feelings of others we may struggle to find our voice and personal power. Together, through EMDR therapy, we can help you develop self-compassion, assertiveness, and a sense of autonomy while nurturing healthy relationships.

Parentification occurs when a child is forced to take on the role of the parent, acting as a caregiver or emotional support for their own parents or siblings.
In such family systems, the lines become blurred and responsibilities are misplaced. As a result, you may have had to grow up too quickly, shouldering responsibilities that were never meant for you. This can lead to issues in adulthood, including you still feeling responsible for your parents or siblings, even though they are grown adults.
Stepping outside of this role can be difficult as you have likely wrapped your identity and worth up in being the care-taker and rescuer of others. Through attachment-focused EMDR we’re able to heal the deep wounds created from a lost childhood and begin to help you find yourself again.

If you grew up in an emotionally immature and dysfunctional family syste you may find yourself struggling with various communication issues that can affect your relationships and overall well-being.
One common issue is difficulty expressing emotions. In these family systems, emotions might have been dismissed, ignored, or even punished. As a result, you may have learned to suppress or ignore your own feelings, finding it hard to communicate them effectively to others. This can lead to misunderstandings and a sense of emotional distance in your relationships.
Another challenge is assertiveness. In an unhealthy family dynamic, your voice may not have been heard, and your needs may have been overshadowed by the needs of others. This can leave you feeling uncertain about asserting yourself and expressing your boundaries. It may be challenging to speak up for yourself and communicate your needs in a clear and assertive manner.
Lastly, poor conflict resolution skills may be another struggle. In emotionally immature or dysfunctional families, conflicts may have been avoided or handled with aggression. As a result, you may find it difficult to navigate conflicts in a healthy and constructive way. It's common to either avoid conflict altogether or become overwhelmed and react impulsively when faced with disagreements.
With EMDR we work together to uncover the roots of these communication issues and rewire your brain for healthier patterns. You'll learn effective communication skills, express your emotions with confidence, assert your boundaries, and navigate conflicts in a more constructive way.

Growing up in an emotionally immature and dysfunctional home can greatly impact our self-perception and how we navigate the world--leading to issues such as perfectionism, people-pleasing, and other validation-seeking behaviors. These coping mechanisms are developed as a way to seek approval and create a sense of safety.
Perfectionism is a heavy burden to carry. Feeling like you constantly need to meet impossibly high standards can drain your energy and leave you feeling never quite good enough. It's as if you're always striving for some unattainable level of perfection, fearing that any mistake or flaw will make others reject you. Perfectionism is a way of protecting yourself from criticism and rejection. If you can be perfect, then no one can find fault with you. But this mindset also keeps you from taking risks and trying new things because it's too scary to fail. You may feel like you have to do everything right all the time, which can lead to burnout and exhaustion.
People-pleasing can become second nature when you've grown up in an emotionally immature and dysfunctional home. You've likely witnessed or experienced situations where your needs and feelings were dismissed or invalidated, causing you to adapt by putting others' needs before your own. It's understandable that you could crave approval and fear the consequences of asserting your own desires.
These validation-seeking behaviors may have become a way to fill the void left by emotional neglect or invalidation in your past. Perhaps you've constantly sought external approval and validation to feel a sense of worthiness. But, the truth is your worth is not determined by the opinions of others. It resides within you, and part of your healing journey is learning to validate and affirm yourself. EMDR therapy can help you untangle these ingrained patterns and find authentic self-acceptance, where you no longer need to seek validation from others.

Family estrangement is a deeply painful experience. When we decide to go low or no contact after years of trying to survive in the family system we may feel a variety of emotions from anger, sadness, and shame to grief and rejection. While this is not an easy decision to make, sometimes it is the right one for someone’s health and wellbeing.
I walk with clients in this decision to help them assess viability of their family, build skills if repair seems possible, and process the feelings and pain when it is not. This is a process no child, whether they are 4 years old or 40 years old wants to go through. I’ll be here with you though, each step of the way from family estrangement to building and strengthening your family of creation.
